![]() Aloha all, I had the privilege to take four of our Junior Class Officers (Poerava Lucas-Waters, Daecee Subia, Tapenga Orevillo, and Ariel Colobong) to a leadership conference at the Hapuna Prince Hotel this past Friday and Saturday. They were joined by other student leaders from other schools to be exposed to the hospitality and visitor industry. On Friday, students attended a session with a motivational speech by Mayor Billy Kenoi, learned about the culture of the hotel, then attended a luau during the evening. Students gained first hand experience on the ins and outs of running a luau, from the set up to the clean up phase. Students also had the task to escort costumers to their seats while showing their aloha and hospitality skills that they had learned during the day. On Saturday, students were given a tour of the hotel and visited 5 departments: Front Desk, Food and Beverage, Pool/Beach, Sales and Events, and Engineering/Repair. Each department provided information to the students on the importance of their department and they were able ask questions to the employees. The students’ said their biggest take away from this experience was learning about the different degrees and backgrounds that are needed to work in the different departments of the hotel. This was the 1st annual overnight event of the Leadership, Exploration, Inspiration (LEI) program. It was a great learning experience for myself and for my students to participate in. - Jay Bumanglag, PHIS' Math Teacher and Student Activities Coordinator |
