![]() Written by Shantel Adolpho, PHIS Fine Arts and Yearbook Teacher Pahoa High and Intermediate School have partnered up with TreeRing Corporation to create our school yearbook. With our partnership, we do not overprint. TreeRing does not require a minimum order; therefore, we only print the number of books that are purchased every year. In return, Treering plants one tree for every purchased yearbook in our school's name. This school year 2019-2020, TreeRing will be planting 37 trees in our school's honor. TreeRing Corporations's partnership with trees for the future has successfully been planting trees since 1989 and has restored over 28,000 acres of forest by planting over 187,000,000 trees. Our school continues to partner with TreeRing Corporation and is a Green Yearbook School. Pahoa High & Intermediate School will continue to support the restoration of trees and you can too by purchasing a yearbook for your child. ![]()
One of our students went head to head with the best and the brightest at the District Science Fair and performed extremely well in a very tough competition. He was also the only KKP student to compete in the senior division this year! Xavier Tablit received many cash/certificate awards – the Sierra Club Moku Loa Dr. Don Worsencroft Award, the East Asian Observatory Research Project Award, the NASA Earth System Science Award, and the U.S. Metric Association Award. Additionally he placed the Best in Subject Senior Division for Physics and Astronomy. But the most incredible news of all was Xavier being chosen to be the recipient of the UH-Hilo Chancellor’s Award!!! This is a One-year tuition waiver given to a prospective high-school student that will attend UH-Hilo beginning Fall 2020. The award was presented by the UH-Hilo Chancellor Dr. Bonnie Irwin and was worth over $8000.00!!! This was a 3 year continuation project that Xavier completed by “Analyzing Stellar Binary Systems to Enhance Contemporary Red Dwarf Spin Down Models.” Ask him about it and he will gladly go into detail (very deep detail!) on what this project was all about. Xavier plans to attend UH HIlo next fall with the goal of obtaining advanced degree(s) in Physics and Astronomy. Please let Xavier know how proud you are of him for his hard work, but also for the outstanding representation of our complex and our school at a very intense, high stakes academic event. On Saturday, February 22, Mari-Jane Navarrete (Grade 8), Hayden Quihano (Grade 7), Elijah Josh Paras (Grade 7), and Rylee Ann Dalmacio (Grade 7) attended a middle school math competition called MathCounts. I wanted to bring students to this competition because when I was a middle school student at this school, I was able to compete at this same event. This event tests students on their ability to answer mathematical problems individually and as a team. Even though there were only 3 schools competing, our team placed 2nd. Individually, Elijah Josh Paras placed 4th and has the opportunity to attend the state level, which will be held on Saturday, March 14 on Oahu. Please congratulate our students for their efforts and their achievements. I would also like to say thank you to Mr. Behr for co-advising and for giving me the opportunity to attend MathCounts when I was in middle school. ![]()
