One of our students went head to head with the best and the brightest at the District Science Fair and performed extremely well in a very tough competition. He was also the only KKP student to compete in the senior division this year! Xavier Tablit received many cash/certificate awards – the Sierra Club Moku Loa Dr. Don Worsencroft Award, the East Asian Observatory Research Project Award, the NASA Earth System Science Award, and the U.S. Metric Association Award. Additionally he placed the Best in Subject Senior Division for Physics and Astronomy. But the most incredible news of all was Xavier being chosen to be the recipient of the UH-Hilo Chancellor’s Award!!! This is a One-year tuition waiver given to a prospective high-school student that will attend UH-Hilo beginning Fall 2020. The award was presented by the UH-Hilo Chancellor Dr. Bonnie Irwin and was worth over $8000.00!!! This was a 3 year continuation project that Xavier completed by “Analyzing Stellar Binary Systems to Enhance Contemporary Red Dwarf Spin Down Models.” Ask him about it and he will gladly go into detail (very deep detail!) on what this project was all about. Xavier plans to attend UH HIlo next fall with the goal of obtaining advanced degree(s) in Physics and Astronomy. Please let Xavier know how proud you are of him for his hard work, but also for the outstanding representation of our complex and our school at a very intense, high stakes academic event.

One of our students went head to head with the best and the brightest at the District Science Fair and performed extremely well in one of the toughest competitions to date. He was also the only KKP student to compete this year! Xavier Tablit, 11th Grade, received many awards – the Imiloa Outstanding Project in Space Science Award, the Sierra Club Moku Loa Dr. Don Worsencroft Award, the East Asian Observatory Research Project Award, the NASA Earth System Science Award, and incredibly the Yale Science and Engineering Association, Inc. Award! Additionally he placed the Best in Subject Senior Division for Physics and Astronomy, and 5th place overall in the Senior Division. This was a continuation project that Xavier completed discovering and researching star “anomalies” that have never been seen before! He garnered prizes of certificates, cash prizes, and even a year’s free membership for him and his family to Imiloa! Xavier will move on to the State Competitions. by Nancy Iaukea |
