Kupa ‘Āina Summer Bridge 2017
The program is a collaboration between DOE, UH Hilo and Kamehameha Schools. It’s a FREE 6-week residential program (June 19th – July 29th ) that offers six college credits (one English and one Math course). We are opening up to all schools in East Hawai’i so there will be a large pool this year.
The Kupa ʻĀina Freshman Bridge Program is a six-week, credit-bearing summer residential experience funded by and in partnership with Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawaiʻi. Our intent is to increase the representation of local students in Natural Resource and/or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) pathways. Accepted students will enroll in college-level English and Math courses and will learn about Hawaiian culture and protocol. Students will also participate in ʻāina-based learning activities at various Kamehameha Schools sites around Hawaiʻi Island to understand their historical, cultural, and geographical significance while interacting with Hawaiian cultural practitioners and other living resources. Additionally, students will have access to academic advising, counseling, tutoring, career readiness experiences, and various self-development activities designed to enhance and increase freshman-year success. This program is provided at no cost to student participants that include tuition, course materials, supplies, room, board, and related expenses for all program activities.
All application materials should be emailed to Kamalani Johnson at Kj31@hawaii.edu or postmarked by December 16, 2016. Documents received after this deadline will have secondary consideration.
