ELL PROGRAM GOAL IS TO . . .
The ELL Program staff provides supplementary language support, academic assistance, school adjustment and acculturation activities for students currently striving to acquire English language skills and attaining understanding of core-content concepts. The staff’s initial focus is on the student’s attainment of the Language Arts standards which emphasizes oral communication, reading, writing, literature and the study of the English language.
- acquire a level of English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing which will ensure comprehension in mainstream classrooms and provide them with equal opportunity to succeed in the regular education program;
- meet the English language proficiency standards, appropriate for his/her grade level;
- acquire a level of achievement in language arts (oral communication, reading and writing) which will enable them to succeed in the mainstream educational program;
- meet the content and performance standards in the core-content subjects, especially language arts and mathematics, appropriate to his/her grade level; and
- develop an understanding and appreciation for the diverse cultures in Hawaii.

WHAT IS ELL?
The English Language Learners (ELL) Program helps students whose first language is not English. Assistance is given only until the student is able to perform at their grade level. ELL Was formerly called SLEP (Students with Limited English Proficiency) and ESLL (English for Second Language Learners) Currently, Pahoa High & Intermediate School (PHIS) ELL program provide support for students who speaks Chuukese, Ilocano, Tagalog, Samoan, and Visayan. |
